I have really been missing in action this fall and into our winter.

My sweet sister has invited me to visit her in Florida and I'm taking her up on it.

It's been cold and snowy here in the northeast and I think a little change of scenery will be a tonic for me.

I now have lots of empty space, clear shelving and very few odds and ends taking up space in my basement~ ahhhh!

I love simplicity!

Have you read this book? I haven't, not yet.

It was a gift from a very good friend. Last week while she was on vacation she read it and says, it has changed her life.

My friend stopped by on Saturday evening and handed me a copy. Apparently she bought every copy at a local independent bookshop and then went to our Barnes and Noble and bought every copy they had. She then returned to the little bookshop and ordered several dozen copies.

In August she is celebrating a special birthday and has decided to gift a copy of Same Kind of Different As me to each guest attending her birthday party!

I'm looking forward to settling in with this book.

Later this week we will be flying to North Carolina to visit my Father-in-law.

I anticipate many hours of reading, relaxing, walking and enjoying the company of my sweet Father-in-law.

I'm still catching up on illustrations that have deadlines quickly approaching, and my stack of summer reads is getting taller each week.

So many books... so little time!

The five beautiful walking villages of the Cinque Terre along the Italian Riviera.

More Information here.

The Cinque Terre is one of the most beautiful places I have visited.
I'm thinking of my first visit to this gorgeous spot when it was early in July, really warm, the water so blue, the bougainvillea so profuse, the wine refreshing and cold.

I will be taking a bit of a blogging break, a 'time-out' to catch up on several painting projects.
Summer here in the northeast is short and between painting, some gardening, my Pilate's classes~ the days feel very short and they are passing too quickly.

It was such a difficult decision because catching up with all of you is such an important part of my day. I really won't be gone all that long, so please check back with me when you can or keep in touch via email.

I will miss you and don't be surprised to see a comment here and there.

On Monday I visited the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Maine.

What a gift.

I am a fan of the works of the late Andrew Wyeth.

I have been for years. Just out of high school I started collecting Wyeth prints and having them matted and framed.

Fast-forward several years... I became the gardener on an estate here in central Maine. One of the owners was a gallery owner in New York City. He was a friend of Andrew Wyeth and held the exclusive for Wyeths at his gallery.

Occasionally Andrew Wyeth and his wife Betsy would visit the estate. One particular August the famed artist was due to arrive for a weekend visit. I knew well of this pending visit- I arranged the flowers for the guestroom that the Wyeth's would have for the weekend.

On that Saturday morning I made a quick trip down to the greenhouses to do some light watering and venting of the beautiful glass greenhouses. As I was driving up the lane to my home, also part of the family property, I saw an imposing figure walking along. I knew just who it was. Worn, baggy khaki pants, very faded navy canvas shoes and an old comfy navy cotton sweater- it was him. I pulled into my driveway and dashed inside. I went from window to window trying to catch the best view of the well known artist.
He made his way to the horses right across from my cottage.
I could see him gently clapping his hands to get their attention.

I took a deep breath, threw on a crisp white shirt, tossed a brush through my hair and nonchalantly walked outside of my cottage to where Mr. Wyeth was leaning against a newly painted white fence talking with a couple of the horses.

With the blush of a young woman I told him that I was a fan of his work. He was gentle~ he took my hand and put his other hand on my right shoulder. He was very complimentary of the gardens that I tended for the family and asked several questions about the horses and the greenhouses. He seemed more interested in the work that I was doing then talking about himself or his work.

It was a short but substantial introduction.

It made my summer.

This man was a gift to Maine and to art.

This beautiful Mom of four sons {instant Sainthood} is a talented photographer, as you can see here with my new prints!

This incredible parcel arrived on Thursday. Three of Kimberly's beautiful prints of her trip, and a few of her cupcake notes! Now I want her real thing- can those be sent across the country Kimberly???

I'm heading out Saturday to look for some vintage frames for my prints and know just where they will hang.

There was a little package of French verse confetti and a couple of her lovely business and calling cards. Which I will add to my ever-growing collection of special cards!

Summer Sundays and a Special Birthday~

While having my coffee early this morning, I dropped in on Jeanne.

She was sharing her first Summer Sunday with us!

She got the idea from The Tablescaper {see link below to go visit, if you haven't already}.

What a genius idea for the busy weekend! Find or photograph images that mean summer to you. Not much text needed, so you can get on with fun summer activities!

Here are a few things that mean summer to me!

A seaside cottage, windows open, a light breeze~ just right for curling up with a good book or a short nap!

This beautiful porch~ gleaming floor, white furnishings, bright bouquets of summer flowers, another good book and some lemonade nearby!

And of course, a few great lobster dinners-paired with heirloom tomatoes and some fresh picked then roasted corn!

Long walks along my favorite beach...

~and lots of herbs, plucked from my garden, then creating a delicious dinner around them.

Quinoa~ {Keen-wah}

~Quinoa Salad~

Last night I made a delicious quinoa salad.

Diced red onion, yellow and orange peppers and cucumbers.

Add lots of fresh sliced strawberries, chopped raw almonds and some grape tomatoes.

A drizzle of ginger dressing and you have a healthy, light meal.
I also added lots of fresh chopped herbs~ parsley, dill, basil, tarragon and chives!

Sorry- my camera batteries were dead- so I got this image online. My salad looked so much better than this. It really did! This one appears to have some diced chicken in it which would also be a good source of protein.

~Quinoa~

Quinoa~ {pronounced Keen-wah}

Not a grain- actually it's a seed. Related to the spinach family.
Quinoa has a wonderfully nutty flavor that is very versatile.
It is a great source of protein and fiber and contains the essential amino acids.
It's high in calcium, potassium, iron and zinc among other important nutrients.
It really is a 'complete food'.

I don't follow a recipe for this type of salad. I use whatever I have in my refrigerator- but the fresh strawberries really add something special.

I always make extra quinoa to have on hand. It's works well in soups and stews and I spoon it onto leftover veggies for breakfast...
So, if you haven't tried quinoa- head to your health food store and pick some up.

Rinse the seeds with cold water and let it come to a slow boil then reduce it to a simmer for about 13 minutes.

I used 1 cup of quinoa to 2 1/4 cups water.

A light rinse under cool water and it's ready to use.

Give quinoa a try- I think you'll like it!

Stand Tall~

My Mother was a stickler for good posture! Growing up she was constantly reminding my sister and I of the importance of good posture...shoulders back-standing tall.

Early ballet classes helped to drive that plea home. After years of seeing a fabulous chiropractor and the reminders of my dear Mother- I know and FEEL the importance of keeping the shoulders back and opening up my spine.
I start private Pilates sessions next week and am very excited to be starting something new and challenging.
After several private sessions I'm sure I will feel comfortable joining the classes-but for now, I'm looking forward to having this time all to myself.

Did I mention that standing tall with good straight posture also takes pounds off our appearance? Just one of the few benefits of standing tall.
***

I am enrolling in Yoga and Pilates classes to strengthen my back and overall core and well-being.
I have taken yoga classes in the past and loved them- loved the flexibility, enjoyed the peacefulness of the classes... a mind cleanse if you will~ and how strong I felt.

I have never taken pilates before and I'm looking forward to it.
I will give them both some time, space out the classes and see which one I want to
become more involved with.

Prelude to Summer~Memorial Day

~ Maine Veteran's Memorial Cemetery ~

Memorial Day weekend was always the prelude to summer. The family gatherings, special holidays and vacations.

Cottages are opened for the season, dates are set for coastal lobster bakes, the cupboards are well-stocked for frequent s'mores and life just becomes a little less hectic and a bit more fun.

It's important to remember the reason for the holiday weekend. The men and women that have fought and continue to fight to keep our country free.

It is a special day to remember those that lost their lives while fighting for our country.

My Dad fought in World War 2~ he was a very handsome Navy man. Lucky for us, he made it home safely and met my Mom on leave in New York City~ the rest, as they say, is history. And a great love story was born.

My birthday falls on Memorial Day weekend and back when that holiday was always on May 30th, there was always a parade-much like Memorial Day anywhere, America.

My Dad told me the parade was especially for me- my very own birthday parade.
Isn't that just the sweetest memory for a child?

My parents are both buried here at the

Maine Veteran's Memorial Cemetery.

It is especially beautiful on Memorial Day.
The lanes are lined with large American flags and there is a flag at each site.

Did you see Julia Roberts on Oprah Monday?

She's such a great actress and seems to be very down to earth and steady-putting her children and husband ahead of her career.

She was talking about the upcoming release of Eat, Pray, Love.

Elizabeth Gilbert's book was such a pleasure to read and reread.

I am anxiously awaiting the movie, which is due to be released sometime in August.

I think it will be the perfect movie to see with a couple of girlfriends.

I also think it might be one of those DVDs that I will want to have in my collection to watch whenever the mood hits.

I love when Elizabeth was visiting Lucca, Italy and describes the figs...

..."But it's not just the meat that's wonderful in Lucca; it's the chestnuts, the peaches, the tumbling displays of figs, dear God, the figs..."

Weekend Review~

~Saturday~

Our new raised beds were assembled this weekend and filled with a rich mixture of soils and compost. I am itching to get my hands in that soil and start planting. I've watered them down and have herbs ready to go. Next will come the long-range plans. Plant once on some things! Sort of the same idea as measure twice, cut once.

~Plotting my plots~
Pretty much all weekend

The above photo is very similar to what I would like to do with our back yard...
I would love to have the lawn dug up and have a series of raised beds and small in-ground beds.
Creating a cozy cottage garden.
All heavily mulched to cut way down on maintenance.
I have yet to present this idea to my DH for fear of a major eye-roll. My defence will be- although a fair amount of work at the early stages, there will be no ground maintenance such as mowing, weed whacking, raking, etc. And we are having a devil of a time with our young man that mows. And we all know I can't be trusted using a mower...
Wish me luck on this!

~Sunday~

While visiting one of the many fabulous garden centers in our area I picked up a good sized Rosemary...as my 6 year old plant was inadvertently left outside on an early frosty night last fall.

It will be a busy week of designing and shopping for the new raised beds along with planning my strategy on the major backyard renovation...

On Sunday I attended a lovely bridal luncheon.
We were served Kir Royales as we arrived and while introductions were made.
The luncheon was fresh, light and in season.
It was so much fun watching the gorgeous bride-to-be with her friends and bridesmaids.
I'm already looking forward to the August wedding on the coast of Maine~ we have reserved a cottage at the resort where the wedding will take place.
Who wants to think about driving home after an evening wedding?
~*~
It was a very productive weekend~ one that will give us lots of fresh vegetables, herbs and cut flowers this summer!

Thanks to my DH for his patience and all of his hard work.

Goody-Goody Spin Pins

I love a good bun. I never was able to create the perfect bun so I was beyond excited when the infamous 'messy bun' became all the rage! That I could do!

Still getting all of the little ends tucked in was hard to master...but now~

Goody has come out with the...... SPIN PIN!

Never one to buy into hair gimmicks ever, but this looked like it might work~ and it does.

You actually screw the pins into the bun that you've made-one on the top and the other on the bottom. You screw them in close to the head and they hold!

My hair is longer than it's been in a while and with warmer weather coming, I wanted to be able to wear it up. But clips just don't hold my thick hair very well.

The Spin Pin come in a blond or brunette finish.

It's that time again. When the days are warm enough to get out on my scooter- the days that I'm not feeling the cycling-love, the days that I just want to zip along and feel the breeze on my face.... and pretend, if only for an hour or so- that I am breezing along the dirt roads, lined with huge yellow sunflowers, on my way to a quaint vineyard.

And will return with two wonderful bottles of local pinot grigio- perfect for a warm day and a light dinner served al fresco~ among the olive trees.

Or just maybe thinking locally and traveling down Rt. 202 between Winthrop and Monmouth- among the apple orchards- with a dream...

Dark Chocolate at it's best~

O.K.- this is not my chocolate standard poodle Lucca. But after searching long and hard it is a photo that so resembles her. I tried taking her photo- but she is simply not up to snuff and wanted nothing to do with the camera. And the photos I did get- had red-eye which pretty much sums up Lucca's mood today! I just couldn't do that to her.

We've had a day... that started Wednesday morning at 3:00!

Numerous visits outside and the B.R.A.T. diet for dinner and you get the idea.

She's been checked-out~ and needs rest, water and lots of love.

I love soup! I make soup at least once a week- from mid-August until mid-May.

It was cold here this weekend. Really cold! There were warnings for those Mothers to bring their special flowering hanging baskets inside Sunday night.

We wouldn't want to freeze our Mother's day gifts on the first night!

I went 'shopping' in my basement and found these four saucers that make the perfect little back-drop for my feathered friends.

The whole family sits on one of the shelves of my chippy-painted cupboard that is in my kitchen.

I've been fired! !!!

Earlier this spring I announced to my DH that I wanted to take on the chore of mowing our yard this year. Looking up from a raised eyebrow followed by an eye-roll, I got a "Ahh Huh".

I thought it would be the best way for me to get the job done to my satisfaction, in a timely fashion and what great exercise~ think of the steps I'd be adding onto my pedometer.

So last weekend I got my first lesson. My DH is on his annual fishing trip in the Florida Keys and I needed instruction on this piece of equipment that I had never used!

I ended up mowing half of the lawn and then took a break.

I decided to finish it up yesterday morning. We had just had a large tree removed from our front yard and I needed to spruce things up a bit!

One rock later, the mower coming to an abrupt halt, put an end to my summer job of being chief mower!

...and my DH has only been gone one day.

I decided to fire myself!

I wonder how much trouble I can get into in two weeks...

The date of this post was January 23, 2009. My husband and I had just returned from Barack Obama's Inauguration in Washington.

It was cold out-very cold! We had been escorted to our seats and were settling in for the history-making event.

When the entrances were made and the swearing-in repeated, we were looking forward to having a great view of our new President giving his Inaugural address...

Just then a 'gentleman' stood so he could get a better view. His stance didn't really take away from our view, but it was mildly annoying.

Unfortunately the teleprompter interfered with our good view {if you look very closely you can see Mr. President's red tie just below the screen}.

Still, it was an amazing day, an amazing weekend. One that we won't forget.

Last summer, while I was in Maryland sea glassing we stayed with my childhood friend's daughter.

This is her wonderful pooch. He was the sweetest~ following children around as they played all day long and looking up in wonder as we ladies screeched with excitement over each smooth chard of sea glass.

I captured this photo just as he was tucked in for the night... all worn out.

I tried and tried to get Lucca and Pickle to hold still for a photo today...all I got was a couple of starry-eyed pups that looked like they were possessed by the up-coming full moon.

Graduation Lifescape~

I put the finishing touches on a Lifescape, had the prints made and shipped it off to Vancouver.

Lifescapes are full of personal memories... like a little girl's favorite snack of cucumbers ~

"tintoombers" and strawberries~ "strobabies".

This lucky young lady has already traveled the world with her family and on some pretty amazing school trips.

I had the pleasure of painting a Lifescape for her sister when she graduated a few years ago.

I have never met these young ladies, but I know a lot about them and have enjoyed working with their Aunt- who is giving the Lifescape to her special niece.

I now have a short break before I need to get started with a few other Lifescapes- one for a wedding, a 60th Birthday and a retirement.

I'm cleaning out cupboards, drawers and closets. Getting organized for a new season.

The trees have little leaves appearing, the lawns are green, spring flowers are in bloom...

and they are predicting SNOW for the higher elevations here in Maine.

~My Mom's Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookies~

I am humbled by the number of emails, cards and warm thoughts expressed due to the passing of my dear Mother {in law}. I do loath the "in law' part of that title.

I suspect that there are Mothers-in-law that may be suited to be referred to as 'in law', but mine was not.

Jean was an amazing Mother, wife, sister, friend and Mother {in law}.

Unfortunately my own dear Mother and Jean never met. My Mom passed away just shy of a special visit by my husband's parents soon after we were married.

But Jean and my Mother shared many of the same special qualities of a Mom.

Both of these Moms were incredibly proud of the accomplishments of their children.

Both put family first.

Both were fabulous wives.

Both took great pride in being fit, trim and always 'put together'.

Both of these women enjoyed a great glass of white wine.

Both loved a day of shopping with their daughters.

Both shared the joyful innocence of an infant.

Both of these women could enter a room and leave it speechless.

Both found peace in Sunday Mass.

I could go on and on about these two women- the two women that have shaped my life.

The two women that I will be forever grateful for including as my role models.

The two women that will be forever missed and loved beyond measure.

Earth Day ~ 2010

I remember the first Earth Day. It was spring break and I was in New York with my parents. We were visiting family and then looking at some schools on our way back to Maine. I remember seeing students raking and clearing trash from the side of the streets and highways.
So much has changed. Our earth is so beautiful how could we have covered her up with our trash? We have come a long way since that first Earth Day. And still...there is much more to accomplish.

You know how I adore tiny, cozy cottages-and this one is really just about perfection, wouldn't you agree?
Did you notice the pale blue porch ceiling?
I might have window boxes at each window, filled with red or pink geraniums and lots of trailing ivy. And I would have an American flag flying.

Here are two sections of a recent Lifescape done for a lovely woman as a lasting memento upon the death of her Father.

The gentleman was very accomplished, played golf almost daily and was instrumental in the design of the very first Corvette by General Motors.

~Artichokes~

I am apt to tell you on any given day that artichokes would be my favorite vegetable... or a fresh garden tomato... or roasted eggplant... or haricots verts with a tiny bit of garlic.

I do love all vegetables and especially artichokes. I have been eating one nearly every day for a couple of weeks. They are so good, so good for you and really, I could eat an entire meal of steamed artichokes with my lemon-Rosemary butter. No, you're right-not figure friendly, but honestly as much as I adore them, I only have them during the spring when they are at their best. Although, I have been known to pick up a couple of seriously poor impostors during the winter months. I have no idea where they are shipped from or how long they may have been in transit.

Plan ahead- Trim the tips of the artichoke leaves and steam approximately 45 minutes-depending on their size. Test by loosening a leaf and tasting.

~*~

For two large Artichokes:

Melt a half stick of butter {please use the real thing} salted!

with the juice of half a lemon

and chopped Rosemary leaves-about half a teaspoon.

***

Dip the leaves in the butter and enjoy. Then remove and toss the 'hairy' outer heart and cut-up the inner heart into the remaining butter.

This is sublimly known as euphoria around these parts!

~The Prelude to Summer Get-away~

As many of you know, I escape to the beach several times a year.

A little sun, sleeping-in, reading on the beach and plenty of alone time is sometimes just what the doctor orders.

So I'm going to finish up some work, pack a bag, load my bicycle and head out early Friday morning.

The forecast is for showers on Friday and then sunny the rest of the weekend.

I have my sunscreen and big straw hat.

My-My-My Macarons~

Don't you love that sound when the mailman drives into your driveway and toots his little horn for you to come out?

That happened late last week. My husband was working from home that afternoon and he delivered this nice box to me while I was reading in the bedroom.

Ooooh~la~la...

A pretty red Vanille box with my name written all over it!

I am pretty familiar with Italian cookies~ but these little pretties are decidedly French and I have never had a MACARON!!!

I am a lover of anything that resembles meringue and pavlova.

Macarons, with their delicate "meringue-ie" cookie, filled with butter creme were all that I had dreamt that they would be. And having given up sugar for Lent...I was ready to indulge!

I know many of you have seen Food, INC.

Parts of it surprised me~ most of it didn't.

I would encourage you to watch it. It's an hour and a half.

Be prepared and then draw your own conclusion.

I don't preach about food or lifestyle choices.

I haven't eaten meat in nearly 20 year. I don't talk about it, I never expect special foods when we are invited to dinners. There is always a vegetable and or salad-I don't go without. And I don't feel deprived.

I take care to get plenty of protein and work with a holistic physician to balance out nutrients.

I was eating some organic turkey and chicken-not often.

Food, INC. is a good eye-opener on many levels.

I woke up to serious downpours, wind and chilly temperatures on Monday morning.

There are times when few words are needed for a day of sheer laziness. I do hope that your Monday was a bit more productive than mine was.

Entering the Convent~

When I was a young girl I was fascinated with Nuns, the "Sisters", those that must be obeyed!

I entered the Academy of Saint Joseph as an eighth grader.

The school is no longer. I do think that fewer and fewer women chose this life for some obvious reasons. Still I was so taken with these women.

I naively entertained the thought {albeit very briefly} of becoming a nun while away at school

* I cannot begin to think of how many times I have seen this movie- The Nun's Story-with Audrey Hepburn.*

I have accumulated a small but interesting collection of "Nun" paraphernalia.

{oooppps! Two words that should hold space in the same sentence}

Most items have been gifts from friends that still love to hear some of the tales and troubles that I was able to get myself into...

This is where I learned the entire mass in Latin, arose each morning to prayers spoken only in Latin and attended Mass every day for the whole school year...
and went to confession every Saturday afternoon.

Still leaving time to accumulate a couple of ouchies before Mass on Sunday morning.

My daily chore was to empty the trash receptacles throughout the private residences of the nuns.

Can you even imagine where I'm headed with this?

After Vespers and we were properly tucked in, the sisters had their hour of power prayer.

That left the door wide open for me to take a few curious friends on a little tour of the Sister's bedrooms. After all, it was pretty safe. Those ladies were fully engrossed in nightly prayer.

We tip-toed into several bedrooms and poked around a little.

Then as the finale', I escorted my friends into the Mother Superior's bedroom.

I had to show them just how enormous her undies really were...

By the time we heard the clomp-clomp-clomp of the black oxfords-there was no place to hide!

Needless to mention Mary and Milo {my Mom and Dad} received a phone call the next morning informing them that their dear daughter would not be coming home for a scheduled weekend.

I was GROUNDED!

Some of my fondest memories of my youth are wrapped up in the year that I 'pretty-pleased' and begged my parents to let me attend a Catholic school.

No disrespect is intended in this post. I am remembering the events as they happened-through the innocent and sometimes jaded eye of an eighth grader.

Happily my niece has inherited the love of a peppery radish dipped in sea salt.
A couple of months ago she emailed me a photo of a beautiful plate of radishes.
That wouldn't mean much to most - but for us it meant a special something that was being served with wine at a new restaurant that had just opened in San Francisco- where she lives.

So, when she was here a couple of nights ago to celebrate her up-coming birthday- she and I shared a plate of French Breakfast radishes served with smokey salt and lemon.
For some reason, radishes just mean spring to me-

How I start my day~

But... when I am alone for a few days, this is how I like to make my coffee.

~The 1-3 cup classic hand blown Chemex~

This belonged to my Mom and Dad and I remember vividly the day that I begged them for it!

They were no longer using it regularly and I had my eye on it for months.

This little beauty seriously- makes the best cup of coffee ever.

Mine is small-it's the smallest size made~ but it is huge on performance. The coffee is amazing.

African Vegetable Soup~

~Snow squalls~

Yesterday afternoon it started to snow... quite hard for a while. Thankfully it melted as soon as it hit the ground.

But it was very damp, windy and cold out , so it felt like a soup kind of day.

~African Vegetable Soup~

This makes a lovely and hearty autumn soup, but is equally comforting on a snowy, spring day.

Don't you love what turmeric does to a dish?

{and the added health benefits}

What do you make for comfort when the weather suddenly turns cold again?

~African Vegetable Soup~

~*~

1 Large onion~ chopped

1 Cup chopped celery

2 Medium sweet potatoes, diced

Saute' in the bottom of your soup pot in a little olive oil until just tender-crisp.

Add 4 cups of water

{I have substituted my own vegetable stock for the four cups of water-and it's delicious}

1- 28 oz. can of diced tomatoes

To this add:

1 tsp. salt

1 tsp. Turmeric

1 tsp. Cumin

1/2 tsp. dried thyme

1/8 tsp. Cinnamon

1/8 tsp. Red Pepper Flakes

1 Bay leaf

Bring to a boil- reduce heat, cover and simmer about 5-7 minutes.

~*~

Add:

2 Small zucchini~ cut into thin half slices

1 Can Garbanzo beans- rinsed

Cook just long enough to soften the zucchini {about 4 minutes}.

Cook Orzo pasta separately and put a couple of spoonfuls into the bottom of soup bowls, then ladle soup into the bowls.

* You can add the pasta to the soup while cooking~ but I don't as the soup becomes starchy and cloudy.

Some of you know that I have a real weakness for small buildings.

I frequently post about small outbuildings that I think would make perfect studio spaces, garden sheds or secret hide-aways.

I stumbled upon The Little Red Door a few days ago while perusing Etsy and I have spent a significant amount of time admiring these Lilliputian homes this weekend!

The Easter Bunny will certainly be making a house call in a couple of weeks.

Honestly, it has been such a fun collection over the years. When friends would enter my home, they would head straight for it to check out any new additions. It really is a great conversation starter.

A few years ago I took it down- just editing things and clearing the decks.
Lately I had been thinking about putting it out again.
A few of these little houses would certainly add something special to my miniatures collection.

Heat wave...

I think that spring has arrived here in Maine. This is pretty amazing~ the snow is gone, the ice is out on all of the area lakes and for three days in a row, the temps have climbed to over 60 degrees! Today it is suppose to reach well into the 70's.

It's like an early spring heat wave~ but we'll take this.

The weather-person did just report that next week we will get back to much more seasonable temperatures.

But for now~ this weekend, I'm going to make the most of it and get out on my bike and take long walks.

70 degrees??? This is crazy for Maine!

I like it! It's clean, smart, basic and reasonably priced and we love that, right?

I live in chambray shirts during the summer and I like that this one is slightly fitted.

Haircut

No, I haven't cut my hair. But, when I see a cute cut like this one on Mia Wasikowska the star of Alice in Wonderland... hmmm.

I won't do it. I chopped off all of my hair a few years ago-short, really short!

I did like the easy carefree do-but not my best look. I think to pull this off, you have to have just the right features. I take things like that under consideration when choosing how to wear my hair. Typically I wear my hair in a longer, messy bob and have forever. But once in a while I like to mix it up.

When my hair is longer {like it is now} I think about a short, wash and go cut. When my hair is short I look forward to pulling it back and wearing it up and sometimes I think about the way it will feel when it tickles my shoulders.

I will always love change- and the good thing about changing your hair... it always grows back.

I like this bathroom, or is it a boardroom? In addition to the bench at the dressing table-there are three chairs.

Do you think that the lady of this bath holds meetings in here? Chin deep in bubbles, giving out daily assignments or listening to the progress of a future publication...

I like the idea of a small, comfy chair in the bath~ sitting right next to a small fireplace would make me really happy!

Spring ahead~

~Spring Ahead~

Saturday night when I go to bed I must remember to set my clocks ahead. If I forget, I am completely out of whack on Sunday. There's something about forgetting and needing to set the clocks in the morning- I'm all tangled up for the day.

So, I am leaving little reminders here and there so I don't forget.

I think that both of the time changes has it's own appeal according to that season. In the fall when we turn our clocks back, I'm always ready for earlier evenings. I light a few candles, turn on the candle lights in the windows, I start making hearty soups and enjoy evening fires. The holidays are ahead of us and there is a coziness about settling in for the fall and winter months to come.

Mother Nature prepares us nicely for this change- the one that will deliver longer days.

This is the time of year when you may plan an early dinner so you can take advantage of the extended daylight.

In our area of the northeast we've had a pretty mild winter. Not nearly the amount of snow that we've had in recent years and lately the daytime temperatures have been above normal.

Still, we welcome these time changes.

The ice on the lake is thin and it's fun to anticipate the date of 'ice-out'~

Cycling Challenge

~My new bike~

The Pure Deluxe Lowstep

For some time I have wanted a new bike. Nothing fancy, just a comfortable bike for pleasure riding. I don't want to climb mountains, or go on a three day trek. I want to ride for exercise, mixing things up a little from the usual workouts.

A few weeks ago I ordered this little sweetie after she came very highly recommended.

First of all the pedals are positioned slightly forward, so when you stop they aren't in your way and both feet can be grounded securely.

The seat is very comfortable which is a must for women. The handle bars are higher, making this bike very comfortable to ride - no pressure on your back and neck.
And it's light ~ light enough so I can easily lift it, no problem.

This bike is a 3-speed, which is all I want. It also has foot and hand brakes.

I chose the creamy yellow and the bike shop thought a wicker basket in front was the perfect addition to it's already swanky but slightly retro styling.

As I came downstairs yesterday morning there was the slightest sweet scent in the air.

I knew immediately~

Spring was really on her way~

The morning's light was different, the way the sun looks when there is a change in the season.

I opened my jacket on my morning walk and the breeze coming off the lake was refreshing, not at all cold.

And I know, that even if we were to get a lingering snowfall, it won't last.

Yes~ those first precious moments of spring arrived here Monday morning.

When I started my blog, over a year ago Joyce was one of those steadies that visited and left a thoughtful comment each day. She has the most positive outlook on things and always ends her visits with a warm hug.

I haven't had the pleasure of meeting Joyce in person, but I've spoken with her on the phone.

She is as warm via the phone as she is in the beautiful writing of her blog.
Last summer I was in need of some prayer and this kind lady not only prayed but her kind and encouraging words helped me through a tough time.

Lucy over at Attic24 is a wife, busy Mum of three, and she totally inspires me.

I have wanted to learn granny squares forever, and have not been able to master it.

Today I am having a granny square lesson! I am very excited and have made lists of all of the yarns I want to for my projects.

I plan to practice-practice-practice.

When I'm ready to start my first big project, I know it will be a bright, cheery afghan-lots of greens and bright pinks.

~Oprah's Chocolate set~

Did you see Oprah on Monday?

The entire set was made out of... Godiva chocolate.

I couldn't help but think of Kwana. I wondered if she was watching. Was she suddenly craving one small square of rich, dark chocolate. I was! She too has given up sugar for Lent!

Giving up sugar for Lent- c r a z y !

Giving up chocolate, that's one thing.

Ice cream would have been a sacrifice, a small one but still.

Hershey shell eggs, that would have been a sacrifice at this time of year.

Desserts, now that's a thought for next year... but all sugar?

After all, if I talk about it every other day, then I'm really not taking my offering very seriously.

Sex and The City, chocolate and Lent...

Remember in the Sex and the City movie, when the girls all go on 'the honeymoon' with

Carrie? Of course you remember, what am I thinking here?

Charlotte wouldn't eat any of the food because after all... it was Mexico.

And she didn't want to risk~ well, you know, an 'upset' of sorts.

All she ate the whole trip was pudding, packaged in Poughkeepsie.

Then with one tiny swallow in the infamous shower scene all was- well, lost!

Well, I must confess... I felt the same way yesterday. I was baking my second of three desserts to be prepared this week when my pinkie swept right down the side of the mixing bowl to avoid a drip and I stuck it in my mouth.

Now it's barely 24 hours into the Lenten season and I have decided to give up sugar!

If you didn't mean to eat the drizzle of chocolate, does it count?

Bad, evil, sweet, chocolate...

Bless me Father for I have sinned.

Lent~ Giving up something we love- something that relates to a real sacrifice.

For forty days...

... and forty nights.

I am happy to do so {easily said on the first day} even though I will be making desserts for three separate occasions between now and Saturday.
I plan to up my journal entries, take-in more of my surroundings, being grateful, really listening, not judging, and trying to have a clear sense of what is truly important.
