I have started collecting some of my favorite books for my two darling Grandchildren. My list grows steadily, but for now am concentrating on books appropriate for young children.

~The Secret Garden~

by Frances Hodgson Burnett

~A Christmas Carol~
~*~
by Charles Dickens

~The Gift of the Magi~
~*~

The illustrations done by Lizbeth Zwerger are exquisite.

~The Diary of a Young Girl~
~*~
by Anne Frank
A gift from my Mother when I was in the sixth grade. I know I have read it at least a dozen times.

~The Snow Goose~
~*~
by Paul Gallico
A favorite of mine and one I look forward to reading with my Grandchildren when the are much older.

I love reading with my Granddaughter. At the present time she is having me read the same books over and over. I don't mind, I know there will be plenty of time for me to introduce both she and her brother to these favorites. My little Grandson is only one and he seems to love books- picture books and is a bit too wiggly right now for a nice long story- soon though.

There are so many great children's books out there. Would you share some of your favorites so I might add to my special little library?

  3. One of my favorite children's books is good for adults too. It is called The Empty Pot by Demi. The message of the book is honesty and it is so well done. The illustrations are done in the Persian miniature style, and it is a beautiful book with a beautiful message. (It has even been turned into an opera)

  6. Oh my goodness, these books draw me back into my childhood--what pleasant covers you found. I was given the Gift of the Magi for Christmas a few years back--the exact copy you show in your list. Such beautiful paintings!

  8. Hi Debra,
I just adore children's books and am saving my daughters' books for when they someday have children of their own. As you live in Maine, you are probably well aware of Barbara Cooney's works -- if not, get thee to a bookstore! Her illustrations and stories are magnificent...Miss Rumpius;Emily; Eleanor; Hattie and the Wild Waves, and many more. Enjoy.

  13. Oooooh Debra, I loooove this! What a great collection (I have some of them already) and I can't wait to order the ones I do not have yet. Reading stories to my kids when the days get shorter and colder, it's always like heaven for me to cuddle up with them on the sofa or in bed with lots of books to read....hmmmm....now you've made me want to order a few books online. Have a great day my dear! XXX, C.
